Find a Bulk Billing Medical Centre in Australia — Without an Unexpected GP Fee
Need a GP appointment that costs you nothing out of pocket? Start with the Australian Government’s bulk-billing practice finder, then check the clinic’s current booking and billing rules before you attend.
Since 1 November 2025, Medicare bulk-billing incentives have been expanded to support GP care for all Medicare-eligible patients. That means more practices can offer bulk-billed appointments — not that every doctor is required to bulk bill every visit.
Where Can I Find a Bulk Billing GP Near Me?
Search by suburb or postcode for practices listed as offering bulk-billed GP services.
Search general practices and narrow results using billing and other available service preferences.
Ask the clinic whether your Medicare eligibility, chosen GP and exact appointment are covered by bulk billing.
How to Find a Bulk Billing Medical Centre: 6 Steps
You do not need to work through dozens of clinic websites at random. The quickest approach is to use an official service finder and verify the booking directly with the practice.
-
Open the Australian Government bulk-billing finder.
Visit health.gov.au/bulk-billing. The page provides a national finder for bulk-billing practices.
-
Enter your suburb or postcode.
Search where you live, work or can reasonably travel. If nearby results are limited, consider adjoining suburbs rather than assuming no bulk-billing practices exist.
-
Check the clinic’s identity and contact details.
Confirm its name, location and contact information. A listing shows where to enquire; it does not guarantee a particular appointment is available today.
-
Open the official clinic website or booking page.
Use the provider’s genuine booking method. Choose a GP, appointment type and available time only when those options are offered by the booking service.
-
Confirm bulk billing for your exact visit.
Check Medicare eligibility, whether the selected practitioner bulk bills, and whether any procedures or non-standard services attract separate fees.
-
Finish the booking and prepare your Medicare details.
Follow the clinic’s confirmation instructions. Bring your Medicare card or number and any relevant concession card, referral or medical information.
What Does Bulk Billing Actually Mean?
Bulk billing is when a health professional accepts the Medicare benefit as full payment for an eligible service. Rather than paying the GP and claiming a rebate yourself, the provider claims the Medicare benefit directly.
The provider accepts the Medicare benefit as full payment for the bulk-billed consultation.
The practice may bulk bill certain patients, doctors, appointment types or services, while charging for others.
The provider charges a consultation fee. You may receive an eligible Medicare rebate, leaving an out-of-pocket amount.
Services Australia explains the formal rules in its bulk-billing information for patients.
What Changed for Bulk Billing in 2025–2026?
A major Medicare change took effect on 1 November 2025. The Government expanded eligibility for GP bulk-billing incentive payments to all Medicare-eligible patients and introduced the Bulk Billing Practice Incentive Program (BBPIP).
Before the change, the relevant GP bulk-billing incentives generally targeted children under 16 and Commonwealth concession card holders. The expanded incentive now supports bulk billing of eligible GP services for Medicare-eligible patients regardless of age or concession status.
Participating practices must bulk bill all eligible services under the program for Medicare-eligible patients. The voluntary program offers an additional practice/provider incentive linked to eligible Medicare benefits.
A BBPIP practice’s requirement applies to the program’s eligible services, not automatically to every procedure, product or separately billed service. Ask about additional charges when your visit includes more than a standard GP consultation.
Medicare Eligibility: Adults, Children, Seniors and Concession Card Holders
Bulk billing depends on Medicare entitlement, the service and the provider’s billing decision. The expanded GP incentive removes the former age/concession restriction for eligible GP consultation incentives. It does not automatically make every appointment free.
| Patient situation | Can bulk billing apply? | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Medicare-eligible adult without a concession card | Yes, for eligible GP services when the practitioner bulk bills. | Ask whether this GP and appointment are fully bulk billed. |
| Child under 16 | Yes, subject to Medicare and provider/service rules. | Check the consultation and any separate vaccine or procedure cost. |
| Pension or Health Care Card holder | Yes, when Medicare and provider requirements are met. | Take the applicable cards and confirm the chosen service. |
| Senior without a concession card | Yes, age alone does not exclude an eligible Medicare patient. | Ask whether the practice bulk bills all patients or selected groups. |
| Person without Medicare entitlement | Usually not under ordinary Medicare bulk-billing arrangements. | Ask about private fees and whether any other entitlement applies. |
If you are unsure whether you are enrolled or entitled to Medicare, check Services Australia Medicare information before assuming the appointment will be bulk billed.
What Can Still Cost Money at a Bulk Billing Medical Centre?
A bulk-billed GP consultation and a completely free visit are not always the same thing. Some services outside the bulk-billed consultation can attract charges.
Ask about dressings, consumables, procedures and other items before the service is provided.
The consultation may be bulk billed while a particular vaccine product still carries a charge.
Check whether the separate pathology or imaging provider bulk bills your requested test or scan.
Employment, insurance or other non-Medicare paperwork may attract private fees.
If a consultation is genuinely bulk billed, the provider accepts the Medicare benefit as full payment for that service. You should not be charged an additional gap for the same bulk-billed service. This does not remove legitimate charges for distinct, non-bulk-billed items.
Five Questions to Ask Before You Book
These questions are especially useful when a clinic website mentions Medicare but does not clearly explain its current billing policy.
- “Is the GP consultation fully bulk billed for someone with my Medicare eligibility?”
- “Does the specific doctor I am booking bulk bill this appointment type?”
- “Are there different fees for a long consultation, evening appointment or weekend visit?”
- “Will any procedures, tests, vaccines or consumables cost extra?”
- “If the appointment is privately billed, what is the total fee and expected Medicare rebate?”
“Hello, I am looking for a fully bulk-billed GP appointment. I have Medicare. Can you tell me whether you have an appointment where I will pay no consultation gap, and whether there are any additional costs?”
Before ending the call, confirm the clinic address, date, practitioner, appointment length, required documents and cancellation policy.

A national guide explains the rules, but individual clinic policies show why it matters to check before booking. The following published medicalcentre-au.org guides are useful examples — not a verified live list of fully bulk-billing practices.
The Candlewood Medical Centre guide explains differences between listed patient groups, standard consultations and weekend billing.
The Carousel Medical Centre appointment and billing guide illustrates why procedures, consumables and other services need separate cost checks.
The Illawarra Medical Centre booking guide explains how concession groups and weekday conditions can affect billing.
The Hocking Medical Centre after-hours guide shows why advertised after-hours fee information should not be confused with actual weekend clinic opening hours.
These examples help you recognise questions to ask, but always use the current clinic website and reception to confirm the billing rules for your own appointment.
What If I Need a GP Today, Telehealth or Care Without Medicare?
A bulk-billing listing does not guarantee a same-day GP slot. Check the clinic’s booking system or call reception.
Telephone and video appointments may have particular Medicare eligibility requirements. Ask whether your telehealth consultation will be bulk billed.
Standard Medicare bulk billing generally requires Medicare entitlement. Ask the provider about private fees and any other applicable funding or eligibility arrangements.

Before Booking, Check These Five Things
Confirm its current policy rather than relying on an old listing or outdated article.
Ask about the doctor, service, appointment length and any applicable conditions.
Ask about vaccines, procedures, supplies, referrals or related tests.
Do not assume a place is available just because the clinic appears in a search result.

How do I find a bulk billing medical centre near me in 2026?
Use the Australian Government bulk-billing practice finder at health.gov.au/bulk-billing, search your suburb or postcode, then confirm availability and billing directly with the clinic. You can also use healthdirect to search a broader range of general practices.
Are GP appointments free for everyone in Australia now?
No. The expanded Medicare incentives support bulk billing for all Medicare-eligible patients, but clinics are not universally required to bulk bill. You pay no consultation gap when the provider agrees to bulk bill your eligible consultation.
Can I get a bulk billed GP appointment without a concession card?
Yes. From 1 November 2025, eligible GP bulk-billing incentives were expanded to all Medicare-eligible patients. Whether your particular appointment is bulk billed still depends on the provider and eligible service.
What is the difference between bulk billing and mixed billing?
Bulk billing means the provider accepts the Medicare benefit as full payment for the service. A mixed-billing practice bulk bills some services or patients and charges private fees for others.
Can a bulk billing medical centre charge for procedures or vaccines?
Yes, separate services or products may attract charges even when the GP consultation is bulk billed. Ask whether any vaccine, procedure, supply or other service has a fee before proceeding.
Do I need a Medicare card for bulk billing?
Ordinary Medicare bulk billing requires Medicare entitlement. Bring your Medicare card or Medicare number so the provider can check the relevant details.
Is telehealth always bulk billed?
No. Medicare telehealth eligibility, the provider’s billing policy and the appointment type can affect whether a phone or video consultation is bulk billed. Confirm the fee and Medicare eligibility when booking.
Do all clinics in the Bulk Billing Practice Incentive Program offer eligible GP consultations without a gap?
Participating BBPIP practices must bulk bill all program-eligible services for Medicare-eligible patients to meet the program requirements. This does not mean every possible service, procedure or product offered by the practice is free.
Can I find a bulk billing GP open on weekends?
Possibly. Use the government or healthdirect finder and contact practices offering weekend appointments. Confirm both weekend opening hours and the billing policy for your specific appointment.
What if I cannot find a bulk billing GP in my suburb?
Expand your search to nearby suburbs, use healthdirect for mixed-billing alternatives, and contact the practices to ask whether any GP bulk bills patients in your circumstances. Do not assume an online directory shows every available appointment.
